Our Story

All in the Family

The Whitehouse Caterers story begins in the hallmark-esque town of Catonsville, Maryland, where 35 years ago, young Nancy White decided to create something of her own. You see, Nancy has always been a strong believer in celebrations! As a talented cook and wonderful host, naturally it was her hope to create a catering company that would help bring more life and flavor to DMV celebrations.

Her son, EJ White, a veteran of the restaurant industry, helped Nancy create Whitehouse Caterers from the ground up. And with his experience, it’s no wonder business boomed! Her beloved community supported them throughout the first five years and they had earned quite the reputation. It was at this time that they became the exclusive caterers at Overhills Mansion. And as you know, here we are today. But that’s not all…

The saying “it’s all in the family” certainly applies to Whitehouse Caterers. Soon after the family business took off, Nancy’s youngest daughter, Paula Brostrom, also joined in on all the event and catering fun. A dedicated mother and student, Paula came on board full-time with Whitehouse Caterers once her daughters were in school and after she received her master’s degree in bio-tech management.

Fifteen years later, after working behind-the-scenes on pivotal office work, Paula became part owner of Whitehouse Caterers. As timing (and luck!) would have it, her oldest daughter, Julia didn’t want to miss out on all the family business excitement. So, after working her entire life at Whitehouse Caterers, working in restaurants throughout college and erning her bachelors of science, Julia also became part owner of Whitehouse Caterers.

With over 30 years of experience, we know that a lot goes into each and every event. We also know that, well, we’re great at what we do. And that’s because of one simple reason: we LOVE what we do. Our love for event design and the mastery of a delicious menu is our forte. We bring that love to every event and wedding every time. We’ve noticed that people that work with us see it too and end up with an experience they rave about for years.

Paula

Paula

Paula learned about the event business from her mother, our founder, Nancy. Working alongside her mom in the family business, Paula learned the logistics of operating a catering company, along with the value of hard work, integrity, and service to others. She is quite possibly the nicest human you’ll ever meet.

Paula earned her master’s degree in biotech management from UMBC, raised two daughters, and is now Oma to her two favorite people. She loves volleyball and spending time with her family.
Julia

Social queen bee and part-owner extraordinaire

Julia

Julia has worked with her mother and grandmother at Whitehouse Caterers since the age of five and it has always been something she truly enjoys doing. From dusting and cleaning and tasting food, she graduated into bussing tables, serving at events, washing dishes, and bartending. She worked hard to learn hostessing, waitressing, and then bartending at other establishments, all while earning her bachelor of science degree in psychology. After college, she moved into event sales, learned event planning and coordination, and finally took on the management of the Whitehouse Caterers team of hospitality heroes and dream makers. In 2018 she became part-owner of Whitehouse Caterers and is our social media bee on Instagram.

Julia is also an officiant! She started officiating in 2012 after coordinating hundreds of rehearsals and receptions. Now, she has thousands of weddings under her belt and ahe still gets teary-eyed at strangers’ weddings.

Her zeal for helping others coordinate important life events is valuable to her role at Whitehouse Caterers and we’re all the better for it! We’ve loved watching her grow into this position with us and are excited to see what’s next!

Julia values everyone at a human level and is passionate about making sure her employees are happy, treated like equals, and with respect by each other, as well as clients.

Lynda

Lynda

Lynda started with Whitehouse Caterers in June 2001, after the birth of her first child. Before gracing us with her skills, she worked in the customer service industry “forever.”. She worked full-time while in high school, pulling graveyard shifts at 7-11, and graduated as a licensed cosmetologist. After high school, she worked in a salon and took on a second job, serving at a country club. Although she had no hospitality experience, she learned quickly and received several promotions. She eventually earned the Executive Clubhouse Manager position and was responsible for two properties and their daily and long-term operations.

She values honesty, integrity, kindness, and compassion. She reminds herself and others that “you don’t know what’s happening in someone’s life and one moment of kindness can be the best thing that person experiences that day.”

In her free time, she enjoys gardening, running, being outside, soaking up the fresh air, and listening to music. Enjoying vacation time with her family without the distractions of daily living is one of her favorite past-times.
Lauren

Lauren

Lauren started at Whitehouse Caterers on January 16, 2017. It was MLK day and she remembers that we had SO many tours that day! She started in sales and then moved to the event planning department in 2021. Lauren graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management from the University of Delaware and a certificate in Baking and Pastry Arts from the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone. She worked at a few bakeries in the Baltimore area. At one bakery, she began to coordinate weddings, in addition to cake decorating, which was her introduction to the event industry. She quickly fell in love with everything about weddings (especially after planning her own) and was so excited when she had the opportunity to join the Whitehouse Caterers’ team. And, bonus, she offers her cake decorating services to our couples!

She loves to spend time with her husband and their 3 daughters. She enjoys baking at home. She has such a sweet tooth and her girls enjoy baking with her. She loves a girls’ night out that includes dinner, dancing, and a nice cocktail! She and her husband enjoy watching reality TV and dining out, especially when it’s for sushi, steaks, or Mexican cuisine. She values honesty and treating others the way she would want to be treated. Fun fact–when she worked at cake bakeries, she was featured on a few food competition TV shows. Check her out on the Cake Wars Power Rangers episode which aired in early 2017!
Karen

Karen

Karen joined the Whitehouse Caterers team in October 2021. She’s a mom and a college student, earning her degree in communications. She started in the event industry in 2005, serving and bartending at weddings. Within a year, she took on the role of wedding coordinator and has been immersed in weddings and celebrations ever since. She loves her job because, she says, “At weddings, I get to see all the different ways people love each other. What could be better?”

She is a Charm City girl – an avid fan of the Ravens, Orioles, Old Bay seasoning, steamed crabs, Fells Point, and Maryland’s brackish water. In her free time, you can find her outside at a dock bar, sipping an orange crush and listening to live music, or cruising around town in her 1970 VW Beetle. Fun fact–She collects vintage Champagne glasses and drinks out of them all the time, with any kind of beverage. The shorter coupe champagne glasses are her favorite because they’re perfect for dunking Oreos in milk.
Chef Rion

Chef Rion

Rion started with Whitehouse Caterers in June 2014 as a prep cook. With hard work, determination, and the completion of his degree in culinary arts, he earned his position as the best Executive Chef we have ever had since our opening in 1988. He is one half of our fantastic duo with his life partner, Angel, our Sous and Pastry Chef. Chef Rion values good quality and a can-do attitude! Most Chefs are known for being high-strung but not our calm, even-tempered Rion.

In his free time, he likes to cook (surprise!). He also loves painting and playing games, especially Warhammer Kill Team. Fun fact–he’s ranked in the top 10 players in the world!
Chef Angel

Chef Angel

Angel started with Whitehouse Caterers in October 2014 as a prep cook. She is now our Sous Chef and Head Pastry Chef. She attended CCBC, studied occupational therapy, and earned an associate of applied science degree.

The majority of Angel’s culinary skills have been self-taught and Chef Rion’s elevated culinary background has helped her develop and refine her techniques. Her enthusiasm for expanding her culinary knowledge, coupled with her creative nature makes her a priceless addition to our culinary team.

Angel enjoys drawing, gardening, hiking, playing games, baking, and cooking. She has 3 cats, a rabbit, and more plants than she has room for! She values honesty, enthusiasm, and dependability. Fun Fact–Whitehouse Caterers is her first job!

Cindy

Cindy

Cindy started with Whitehouse Caterers in 2007 as our Bookkeeper. After high school, Cindy earned her degree in accounting and was hired at Ernst and Young. She managed payments at UVA Hospital from 1989-1991 before working as an accountant at Bailey, Self, Harris, and Company. In 1994 She took on her most important job as a full-time mama, where she mastered the skill of patience. Now she loves spending time with family (especially her new grandson) and friends, traveling, and visiting wineries.
Josh

Josh

Josh started at Whitehouse Caterers as a server in 2018. During the 2020 Covid-19 period, he picked up some work in construction and contracting. That experience prepared him to work in our Restoration Department, where he takes gentle care of the Mansion while preserving its unique, historic features. After proving that he was more than we could dream of, he became the director of the department in 2021.

Josh takes web development classes at Anne Arundel Community College and enjoys live-streaming on Twitch, Muay Thai classes, and weightlifting.

Josh completed two deployments in support of the global war on terror. One was in the Mediterranean on the U.S.S Harry S. Truman and the other was in the Persian Gulf on the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy. We are honored to have him on staff and appreciative of his military service.
